To most of us, a leaf is a piece of nature noticed in the fall when it turns into a nuisance to be raked and discarded.
But for some folk artists in Artistic Leaf Workshop, a leaf means more. They have turned leaves into artwork by hand sculpturing portraits, landscapes and words on them.
Last week I sent my friend’s wedding picture to the Artistic Leaf Workshop, and order them to create a personalized sculpture on the phoenix leaf.
It is pretty cool even though it is not an identical sculpturing absolutely on the leaf as nature intended. I order more leaf sculpture from them.
I eager to learning much more about this craft. Have you ever seen this leaf craft before?
From the Artistic Leaf Workshop, I know that this gorgeous leaf art originated in a small town in Jinan China and is done on dry leaves of phoenix trees. This leaf art is one of the oldest forms of art, and only a few people around the world are left that create this form of art.
The phoenix tree is a very large tree that has heart-shaped leaves. It produces kelly flowers and brown fruit when it is ripe. It has many myths and stories associated with it. For instance, one of folklore in China is that ‘Planting phoenix tree attracting phoenix’(栽下梧桐樹, 自有鳳凰來). The phoenix tree is the symbol of peace, noble, love and lucky, and it is also considered sacred to Buddhists.
I love this leaf art because it is the unique and beautiful gift for my friend and family. Of course the leaf sculpture of my portrait is my faves.
